Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
A viable eligible list may not exist in this location and NYSDOT may be authorized to make a provisional appointment at this location. Candidates appointed provisionally must take and pass the next scheduled Civil Service examination, and be reachable on the resulting eligibility list, or their employment in the position (may have hold item) will end.
The minimum requirements for taking the Promotion examination are:
You must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had three months of PERMANENT competitive, non-competitive or 55b/55c service as: an Assistant Drill Rig Operator, Assistant Land Surveyor 1, Assistant Land Surveyor 2, Drafting Technician, Drill Rig Operator, Engineering Technician, Environmental Engineering Technician 1, Environmental Engineering Technician 2, Senior Drafting Technician (all parenthetics), or Senior Engineering Technician (Soils).
After one year of the service in a position described above, successful candidates will be qualified for an appointment.
The minimum requirements for taking Open Competitive examination are:
Either 1. TWO years of experience assisting in engineering or engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, landscape design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying, AND graduation from a high school or possession of a diploma issued by a recognized educational authority;
Or 2. an associate’s degree in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, or electronics;
Or 3. a certificate in CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, or electronics** issued by a regionally accredited college or university and ONE year of experience as listed above in #1;
Or 4. 36 semester credit hours of college course work in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics or electronics technology may be substituted for experience at the rate of 18 semester credit hours equaling ONE year of experience listed above in #1;
Or 5. Graduation from a high school technical education program (recognized by the New York State Education Department as meeting acceptable program practices and standards) in CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, or electronics may be substituted for ONE year of experience listed above in #1.
Duties Description As a Senior Engineering Technician, you would assist in engineering work. You may inspect portions of construction projects; take part in field survey work including the leading of small project survey parties; make and check engineering computations; prepare portions of written reports; assist in the design of highways and buildings including landscaping projects; and conduct complex field and laboratory tests of engineering materials. You may be assigned as the technician assistant to an engineer. You may also be expected to use various computer applications in the performance of your duties.
At the time of appointment and continuously thereafter, possession of valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State is required or otherwise must demonstrate the ability to meet the travel requirements of the position.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
