Minimum Qualifications This position is open to candidates who are reachable on the Information Technology Specialist 4 (Database), G-25, Civil Service eligible list OR have one year of permanent competitive service as an Information Technology Specialist 4 (Database), G-25. As well as those deemed eligible for transfer under Section 52.6 of the Civil Service Law. The transfer cannot be a second, consecutive transfer resulting in an advancement of more than two grades. In order to qualify for a Section 52.6 transfer, candidates must have one year of permanent competitive service in a qualifying administrative title such as Information Technology Specialist 3 (Data Communications), G-23, Information Technology Specialist 3 (Database), G-23 and Information Technology Specialist 3 (Systems Programming), G-23.

Duties Description As a member of the Technology Division, Database Platform Bureau, the incumbent will be responsible for all activities associated with the design, development, installation and performance of SFS databases. In this regard, the incumbent will design or assist in the design and maintenance of databases, install and maintain database software, monitor the operation and performance of database software, identify and resolve malfunctions of database software, and lead and/or participate in the definition and adherence to database security.

Specific Responsibilities:

• Design or assist in design and maintenance of databases.
• Develop or assist in the development of physical database design, addressing performance criteria and standards.
• Coordinate database change controls to interact with application change management.
• Participate in development of disaster recovery planning for database.
• Install and maintain database software products and specialized data access programs.
• Test and implement new and updated versions of database software from vendors.
• Act as vendor liaison for the diagnosis and resolution of database-related software problems.
• Participate in development of database standards such as naming conventions, update protocols, performance standards and internal controls.
• Convert existing databases to new or updated software releases from vendors.
• Monitor the operation and performance of the database software, taking corrective action when necessary to obtain the most effective use of it.
• Monitor and tune such variables as space, buffers, logs and journals.
• Identify and resolve malfunctions and complex problems related to database use, maintenance and management.
• Maintain a log of database problems and resolutions for future reference.
• Assist application programmer analysts by determining the causes of and solutions to database and system performance problems.
• Participate in the analysis of database needs and in the selection and acquisition of database software related products.
• Perform database capacity planning.
• Make recommendations on acquisition of new hardware, database software products and maintenance service.
• Define or participate in the definition of database security related standards.
• Define and/or assist in the definition of security requirements for databases, data entities and data elements.
• Write and test database utility programs required for database maintenance, recovery and performance management.
• Analyze new and updated software releases from vendors to determine their effects upon the existing software environment.
• Install, customize and maintain complex database software components.
• Act as a primary vendor liaison for the diagnosis and resolution of complex database-related software problems.
• Maintain a high level of expertise in conventional and specialized database areas and provide related training to application programmer analysts, operations personnel and Information Technology Specialists 3 (Database).
• Install, configure and administer Oracle Enterprise Manager.
• Install, configure and administer Oracle Clusterware.
• Install, configure and administer Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM).
• Monitor the ASM instance and storage using a command line interface.
• Monitor the ASM instance and storage using Oracle Enterprise Manager.
• Install, configure and administer Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) instances.
• Install, configure and administer Oracle recover manager (RMAN).
• Install, configure and administer Oracle Data Guard.
• Administer and monitor Oracle Exadata engineered systems.
