Minimum Qualifications Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree and three years of progressively responsible experience in planning, development, or public relations. Full-time experience in sales, marketing, public relations or a related field may be substituted on a year for year basis for the educational requirement. The preferred candidate will have experience working in trail management and development of trail networks and knowledge of and experience with stakeholder outreach. Candidates must possess strong analytical and critical thinking skills; excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work closely with and maintain good relations with internal staff and external stakeholders; and strong leadership and mentoring abilities.

Duties Description The New York State Canal Corporation, a subsidiary of the New York Power Authority, is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the Canalway Trail which is a network of approximately 300 miles of multiple-use trails across upstate New York. The Canalway Trail follows the towpaths of both active and historic sections of the New York State Canal System as well as adjacent abandoned rail corridors.

Under the general supervision of the Director of Policy & Program Development, the incumbent of this position will manage all aspects of the Canalways Trails Program, designed to establish, operate, maintain and promote an end-to-end multi-use recreational trail along the NYS Canal System; coordinate maintenance of the trail system with internal staff and external stakeholders; manage the cooperative initiatives between the Canal Corporation, volunteers, local governments and not-for-profit organizations; and serve as liaison to state and federal agencies to ensure coordination of trail management, operation, maintenance and promotion.
