Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field plus four years of relevant hands-on experience with: infrastructure management, network administration, cloud computing and/or server administration or Associate’s degree in Computer Science or a related field plus six years of relevant hands-on experience with: infrastructure management, network administration, cloud computing and/or server administration.

• Professional experience with all aspects of the administration and monitoring of TCP/IP based LAN/WAN networks and their relational components required. Knowledge of VPN setup is required.
• Experience with Firewall, IPS/IDS configuration and monitoring.
• Experience with supporting cloud hosted applications.
• Experience supporting applications from server, network and QOS perspectives.

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field plus five years relevant hands-on experience with: infrastructure management, network administration, cloud computing and/or server administration.

• Experience with Active Directory and Group Policy Administration.
• Experience with VMware environments and administration.
• Experience with AIX and Windows Server Administration.

Duties Description Primary Purpose
The Senior Network (Infrastructure) Engineer performs a wide variety of operational, developmental and administrative tasks relating to the maintenance and evolution of desktop, server-based systems, network, telecommunications, hardware and software. The Infrastructure Engineer is characterized by higher levels of responsibility, independent judgment and technical expertise. The Infrastructure Engineer possesses a detailed understanding of global system interactions between servers, storage, networking and client computing devices, utilizing this knowledge to design effective solutions, improve system performance and troubleshoot problems.


Essential Functions
• Collaborate with Infrastructure team members to design hardware, network, and storage related solutions that satisfy business requirements.
• Participate in network architecture design and change implementation.
• Plan for and implement field site infrastructure and network changes.
• Perform feasibility studies and cost benefit analysis based on facts gathered about current or proposed infrastructure enhancements to address business needs.
• Continuously assess, maintain awareness, update and improve the organization’s infrastructure in both the main and field offices.
• Monitor network and server performance and integrity, proactively taking action to avoid service disruption.
• Configure, manage, maintain, and secure firewalls and VPN systems.
• Perform regular operational maintenance tasks such as applying patches to network switches. Schedule and plan required system outages to create minimal disruption of systems for DASNY users.
• Troubleshoot application, network, and infrastructure issues in production, test and development environments using a detailed understanding of end-to-end application communications and operations.
• Work directly with external vendors on technical solutions and production defects.
• Follow internal change management process to communicate and manage changes in the environment.
• Participate in infrastructure project planning, execution and implementation.
• Maintain hardware, software specifications, environment architecture and vendor contact information in a central location. Proactively manage technology assets.
• Perform in the capacity as a subject matter expert and resource in area of infrastructure, assisting other IS department staff and DASNY users with system knowledge and problem resolution.
• Responsible for performing in-depth research and developing knowledge for the Infrastructure unit when issues arise outside of the unit’s knowledge base.
• Keep up with industry standards to make recommendations for changes and/or updates to technical equipment based on the organization’s overall mission and strategic plan.
• Project and anticipate infrastructure equipment needs. Develop roadmaps for the technical resources and applications owned by DASNY.
• Assist in managing the budget for the purchase, repair and replacement of infrastructure equipment on an ongoing basis.
• Responsible for the proper disposal and recording of end-of-life infrastructure equipment.
• Provide technical expertise and leadership for staff and project teams.
• Participate in disaster recovery planning and execution.
• Deliver outstanding customer service to on-site and remote users.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
• Provide advice to applications development, security, technical operations or end-user personnel relating to infrastructure equipment, software and capacity.
• Participate in the completion and follow up of requests for proposal; as needed, participate in the evaluation of responses, participate in contract negotiations, and work with others responsible for contract development.
• Work closely with the Information Security Officer to identify and apply appropriate security controls for user access to business information and submit updates to the disaster recovery plan when system changes occur.
• Maintain current knowledge of new hardware/software products and trends in the technology industry.
• Contribute to budget preparation, planning and management for the above functions.
• Assess, develop and implement internal controls, and oversee the review and testing of same.
• Assist Management in the development of policies.
• Develop, document and implement procedures.
• Undertake special assignments as directed.
• Must maintain regular attendance in accordance with DASNY attendance and leave policies.
• Must adhere to the NYS Information Security Policy Standards established and issued by the Office of Cyber Security and Critical Infrastructure Coordination. (Standards can be found on the Intranet and NY State ITS sites).

Additional Comments Supervision
Supervision of employees may be required.

Physical/Mental/Visual Demands
Travel is required, using public transportation, rental vehicle, DASNY vehicle or personal vehicle. This travel may include overnight stays at public accommodations and related establishments. This position requires complex and time-pressured decision-making and availability to work a modified work schedule or extended workday hours. May require physical mobility (movement from place to place) and exposure to heights (climbing ladders, scaffolding, etc.). Must be able to lift up to fifty pounds.
