Minimum Qualifications VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR 1/SG-12
Minimum qualifications for taking the open-competitive examination:
1. Four years of appropriate trade experience and high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma issued by a recognized state educational authority;
2. OR An associate’s degree in a related trade area and two years of appropriate trade experience;
3. OR A bachelor’s degree in any area and one year of appropriate trade experience.

VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR 2/SG-13
Minimum qualifications for taking the open-competitive examination:
1. Four years of appropriate trade experience and a minimum of 12 college credits in pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. These must include 3 college credits in each of the following areas: human development and learning; teaching students with disabilities and special health needs; curriculum instruction, and assessment; and English language arts or communication skills;
2. OR An associate’s degree in a related trade area including or supplemented by 12 college credits of pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. These must include 3 college credits in each of the following areas: human development and learning; teaching students with disabilities and special health needs; curriculum instruction, and assessment; and English language arts or communication skills; and two years of related trade experience;
3. OR A bachelor’s degree in any area including or supplemented by 12 college credits of pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR 4/SG-17

Professional certification as a teacher of trade subjects in the appropriate specialty as issued by the New York State Education Department.

Duties Description Teach trade skills to inmates in a correctional facility. Duties include preparation of lesson plans, course outlines, trade analysis and may include shop layout planning, establishment of shop safety programs and the maintenance of tools and equipment. Be expected to manage a classroom environment appropriately. Be responsible for meeting each learners individual needs and evaluating their progress as part of record keeping duties.

Additional Comments No written test is given, candidates are scored based on qualifications and experience.
