Minimum Qualifications Grade 18 - Bachelor's degree in Public or Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Statistics/Biostatistics, Environmental Science, or a related field AND two years of relevant professional experience in an appropriate field; or a Master’s degree in the above fields and one year of professional experience in an appropriate field.
Grade 22 - Bachelor's degree in Public or Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Statistics/Biostatistics, Environmental Science, or a related field AND three years of relevant professional experience in an appropriate field; or a Master's degree in the above fields and two years of professional experience; or a doctorate in the above fields.
Preferred Qualifications:
The preferred candidate will have a Master’s or higher level degree in Public or Environmental Health, Epidemiology or Statistics/Biostatistics. The preferred candidate will possess: experience in geographical information systems (GIS), SAS, environmental, occupational, hazard, and/or reproductive epidemiologic research; experience in exposure assessment and public health surveillance; an understanding of environmental risk factors for disease; demonstrated proficiency in the collection, management, linkage, and analysis of environmental and human health data; excellent written and oral communication skills for diverse audiences; and strong analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills. Knowledge working with large datasets is desirable.
Duties Description The Research Scientist will join a strong scientific research team in the Bureau of Environmental & Occupational Epidemiology. The incumbent will participate in all phases of epidemiological research and surveillance, including: problem definition, study design, executing research plans, acquiring and managing relevant data, statistical/spatial/temporal analyses, summarizing findings, interpreting and sharing results, and preparing grant proposals, reports, and publications. Other responsibilities will include: participate in various environmental, occupational, hazard, and reproductive health studies to determine risk factors for disease; monitor and evaluate the health effects of exposure to toxic substances at home, at work, and in the community; incorporate GIS to map disease and risk factors; conduct environmental public health surveillance; assess exposure to identify and reduce environmental health risk; and provide public health education regarding health risks.
Additional Comments Contingent-permanent, non-competitive, full-time. Occasional travel, including overnights and travel to areas not served by public transportation is required.
