Minimum Qualifications +Minimum Qualifications for Provisional Appointment:

You must be a qualified employee of New York State and have one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Engineering Geologist.
OR
You must have a bachelor’s or higher-level degree in earth science, geology, geological engineering, geophysics, geochemistry, or hydrology; AND you must have two years professional experience in geology.
Substitution: A master’s or higher-level degree in earth science, geology, geological engineering, geophysics, geochemistry, or hydrogeology may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
Examples of professional geology experience are, but are not limited to: Experience that involves actual evaluations of subsurface conditions. For example, all forms of hydrogeology (including environmental or water supply subsurface investigations), exploration work in the mining or oil and gas industries, or production drilling. Geophysical and geotechnical investigations focused on geologic conditions and interpretation of data from laboratory analysis and studies.
Examples of non-qualifying experience are, but not limited to: Hydrological experience focused primarily on surface water as opposed to groundwater, including flood analysis, reservoir or storm sewer design, and similar work. Geography and exclusively laboratory-based work such as preparing thin sections for microscopic analysis, or preparing soil and rock samples for chemical analysis. Planning and evaluation of pipelines, storage tanks, tank integrity and related work.

NOTE: In accordance with Chapter 475 of the Laws of 2014, all professional geologists in New York State must obtain licensure under Title VIII of the Education Law; based on this, if appointed to this position you WILL be required to obtain your Fundamentals of Geology within two years of your permanent appointment date and you will be required to obtain your professional geology license in order to be promoted in the future.

If there is a viable promotion examination eligible list (three acceptors) for this position, candidates who qualify based on 70.4 transfer cannot be considered.

Duties Description Must be able to perform site visits, communicate effectively with the regulated public and co-workers by telephone, in writing and in person. Duties include directing investigation and remediation activities for the cleanup of Inactive Hazardous Waste sites, Brownfield sites and Environmental Restoration Projects including preparation and presentation of Proposed Remedial Action Plans and Records of Decision at public meetings. Duties may also include in depth analysis of geologic and hydro-geologic reports and assisting in the preparation and presentation of expert testimony in court and in other legal proceedings, if necessary. Knowledge of Long Island aquifers , remediation techniques and ground water modeling are needed to perform daily duties.

Additional Comments Must have valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain and work in remote areas and adverse weather conditions. Must successfully complete (or have completed) the 40 hour OSHA 1910.120 training course and all other required training. Must complete an annual Health and Safety Program including medical monitoring, fit testing, and 40 (or 8) hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification.
