Minimum Qualifications Doctorate Degree and three years of professional research experience in the appropriate field; or a Master’s Degree and five years of such experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will have a doctoral degree in Public Health, Psychology, Sociology, or a related social science or public health field and a minimum of six+ years of professional research experience in that field. Other relevant experience would include:

• A minimum of six years of experience in rigorous research that has been supported by NIH or equivalent funding.
• Have in the recent past directed or co-directed the overall coordination and implementation of at least two or more research studies funded by NIH or equivalent agencies as a PI or co-PI.
• Have a publication record that has focused primarily on socioeconomically disadvantaged communities and disparities research (i.e., 20+ peer-reviewed reports and/or book chapters) that is related to mental health or behavioral health.
• Primary interest in examining longitudinal trajectories of social determinants as predictors or antecedents of behavioral health outcomes (mental illness and/or substance use) and in diverse populations.
• If past research has not been a primary focus on mental health or behavioral health, past research approaches must be directly applicable and translatable to mental health and/or behavioral health to support the study of co-occurring conditions (e.g., mental illness, substance use disorders, other physical and psychosocial conditions).
• Have a prior track record, or have a strong interest, in working within non-clinical, community based settings, and/or clinical settings targeting the most socially and economically vulnerable populations across NYS.


Duties Description Under the general direction of the Director of the Division of Social Solutions and Services Research, the incumbent will lead Division projects related to social and structural factors (with a specific focus on the role stigma and discrimination) and relation to behavioral, biological, and services-related outcomes. This person will lead grant writing efforts to secure federal, private, and government funding for robust research and evaluation, data analysis, and manuscript development.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• The development of highly competitive proposals for research grants and contracts that further the mission of NKI and attend to the priorities of OMH that directly relate to delivery of services in the community.
• Lead the data analysis component of studies including survey development, quality control, oversee data collection, study implementation, data analysis, and presentation and dissemination of study findings to scientific and local government audiences.
• Working with other NKI investigators in the planning, design, and analysis of studies related to social, psychosocial, and structural factors.
• Mentoring of junior research scientist, research fellows, and research project staff.

Additional Comments Background Investigation Requirements: Prospective appointees will be: 1) Checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment and may have their names removed from the eligible list(s) for the title(s) if applicable. 2) Investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC), which includes State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. All convictions must be reported; conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or any falsified or omitted information on the prospective appointee’s employment application, may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prospective employees will be fingerprinted in order to obtain a record of their criminal history information, and may be required to pay any necessary fees. 3) Screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees may be required to pay any necessary fees. Additionally, prospective employees whose names are indicated on the SCR may be barred from appointment.

Additional Comments: This position is eligible for a Downstate Adjustment of $3,026.
