Minimum Qualifications Current NYS employee with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent service as a Senior Sanitarian, Grade 18.

Preferred Qualifications: Surveillance experience, knowledge of State and Federal regulations applicable to Hospitals and Diagnostic and Treatment Centers and familiarity with New York State facility licensure and surveillance activities and the New York State Certificate of Need (CON) process. Strong written, oral, problem solving and interpersonal communication skills. Experience using Microsoft Office products such as Access, Word and Excel.

Duties Description The Senior Sanitarian will conduct oversight of State and Federal health care facilities, including: Acute Care Hospitals, Critical Access Hospitals, Rehabilitation Hospitals, Primary Care Clinics, County Health Department Clinics, Ambulatory Surgery Centers, End Stage Renal Dialysis Centers, Rural Health Centers, Federally Qualified Health Centers, Outpatient Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy Centers.

Provider oversight is conducted via periodic licensing/certification surveys and complaint investigations, as well as review of Certificate of Need (CON) applications for new services or changes to services. The different provider regulations result in 17 different types of surveys.

The Senior Sanitarian is responsible for participating in the survey, complaint investigation and CON review process by applying knowledge and expertise of various fire, sanitation, and safety codes. A primary focus of the Senior Sanitarian is application of Life Safety Code and other related National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) fire safety codes.

Surveillance of the providers is accomplished through direct observation, interviews and record review. The focus of this surveillance is on the systems which assure quality care delivery and patient safety.

Additional Comments Full-time, permanent appointment.
This position may involve some statewide travel which may include locations not served by public transportation.
