Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in genetics, biology, chemistry, or a related field and one year of relevant professional experience in an appropriate field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
The preferred candidate will have work experience or course work in clinical laboratory testing; public health and excellent written and communication skills. Previous experience with immunoassays and high-performance liquid chromatography would be beneficial.

Duties Description The Assistant Research Scientist will have a dual role in the New York State Newborn Screening Program that is comprised of laboratory-based clinical testing. The incumbent will prepare specimens and perform critical laboratory assays to identify newborns with congenital hypothyroidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, hemoglobinopathies and cystic fibrosis. Additionally, the incumbent will independently communicate with hospitals throughout New York State to ensure they are aware of borderline results. The incumbent will manage case reviews and will ensure borderline screening results are monitored and tracked.

Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, fulltime. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment, and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations. In addition, dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may also be required.
