Salary RangeFrom $81446 to $102661 Annually
Minimum Qualifications One year of permanent competitive service as a Senior Attorney; or one year of permanent competitive service in a title eligible for transfer under Section 52.6 or 70.1 of the Civil Service Law with current New York State Bar Admission.
Duties Description The Senior Attorney will provide legal support to the Division of Consumer Protection in the Department of State. He/she will give guidance to consumers when buying products or entering into contracts on such matters as scam prevention, identity theft prevention, financial literacy, and product safety. The Senior Attorney will assist the Division to mediate and investigate consumer complaints against businesses and individuals engaged in fraudulent, misleading, deceptive, predatory or illegal trade practices and will prosecute violators of the “Do Not Call Law” in administrative proceedings. Legal support will be provided to the Division in assisting victims of identity theft or consumer data breach mitigate their losses and secure prosecution of responsible persons, entities or reporting agencies. The Senior Attorney will also recommend and draft consumer protection legislation and amendments and draft regulations on consumer protection issues including product safety and recalls, as directed by the General Counsel. Legal assistance will be provided to the Division in responding to Freedom of Information Law requests, document retention and contract review. Consultation with attorneys from other state agencies will be necessary on matters related to the design, installation, inspection and maintenance of playgrounds (Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation); proposed life insurance regulations (Department of Financial Services); the Consumer Bill of Rights Regarding Tax Preparers (Department of Taxation and Finance); and the preparation of a product recall information (Department of Health). The senior attorney will also provide legal advice and assistance to the General Counsel, as requested.
