Minimum Qualifications VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR 1/SG-12
Minimum qualifications for taking the open-competitive examination:
1. Four years of appropriate trade experience and high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma issued by a recognized state educational authority;
2. OR An associate’s degree in a related trade area and two years of appropriate trade experience;
3. OR A bachelor’s degree in any area and one year of appropriate trade experience.
VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR 2/SG-13
Minimum qualifications for taking the open-competitive examination:
1. Four years of appropriate trade experience and a minimum of 12 college credits in pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. These must include 3 college credits in each of the following areas: human development and learning; teaching students with disabilities and special health needs; curriculum instruction, and assessment; and English language arts or communication skills;
2. OR An associate’s degree in a related trade area including or supplemented by 12 college credits of pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. These must include 3 college credits in each of the following areas: human development and learning; teaching students with disabilities and special health needs; curriculum instruction, and assessment; and English language arts or communication skills; and two years of related trade experience;
3. OR A bachelor’s degree in any area including or supplemented by 12 college credits of pedagogy core coursework earned from a New York State Education Department approved program. These must include 3 college credits in each of the following areas: human development and learning; teaching students with disabilities and special health needs; curriculum instruction, and assessment; and English language arts or communication skills; and one year of related trade experience;
VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR 3/SG-15
Minimum qualifications for taking the open-competitive examination:
Initial certification as a teacher of trade subjects in the appropriate specialty as issued by the New York State Education Department.
VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR 4/SG-17
Minimum qualifications for taking the open-competitive examination:
Professional certification as a teacher of trade subjects in the appropriate specialty as issued by the New York State Education Department.
SPECIAL NOTES:
- You may refer to the New York State Education Department (NYSED) Office of Teaching Initiatives for a description of experience requirements by specialty title.
- Candidates for Business and Distributive Education must have a bachelor’s degree and follow the New York State Education Department academic teacher certification guidelines.
- Candidates for Computer Technology must meet the minimum qualifications under options 2 or 3 for Vocational Instructor 1 or Vocational Instructor 2.
Duties Description Incumbents of positions in this class, utilizing both professional and practical training and experience, plan lessons and instruct and evaluate the performance and progress of learners who are in charge of a state agency, in vocational and trades specialties. Instruction includes a verbal written presentation of the theoretical along with demonstrations of practical applications of that theory. Instructors at the 3 and 4 levels in vocational specialties are certified by the New York State Department of Education.
