Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must have six years of educational and/or administrative experience in an educational program or organization, or in a government or community-based organization. This experience must have involved serving/supporting at risk youth or related initiatives.

Substitution: A bachelor’s degree in education, public policy, public administration or other field related to education can be substituted for four years of experience. A master’s degree in education, public policy, public administration or other field related to education may be substituted for an additional year of experience.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for a Project Assistant position in the Office of Student Support Services. This position will focus primarily on providing coordination and support between program offices within the State Education Department and external partners, including, but not limited to schools and districts, juvenile justice placements and education providers, Division of Criminal Justice Services and Office of Children and Family Services. The successful candidate will also have assignments related to other programs and services within the Office of Student Support Services.

Student Support Services promotes student learning and wellness as well as school improvement by directing and managing programs and services designed to provide the supports necessary for children and youth to successfully fulfill their potential as students and citizens. The programs and services provided include guidance and resources to schools related to physical health, mental health, wellness, social and emotional development, school climate and safety, extended learning opportunities, pupil personnel services, academic interventions, the education of youth in foster care, as well as alternative education and education programs for youth involved with the justice system.
Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Collaborate with staff from other program offices within the department regarding Department policy and program needs related to justice involved youth;
• Assist in development of partnerships between schools and offices/agencies engaged in corrections and juvenile justice reform efforts, including collaborations with NYSED staff, Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, Office of Children and Family Services, and other juvenile justice systems to ensure and strengthen quality education programs as well as school and community re-entry efforts for justice involved youth;
• Collaborate with educators in schools and programs for school-age youth in detention, placement or incarceration to ensure and strengthen quality education programs as well as school and community re-entry efforts for justice involved youth;
• Provide technical assistance regarding laws, rules, and regulations that apply to education of at-risk, detained, and/or incarcerated youth to schools, local education agencies, other public or private agencies, professional groups or parents;
• Assist in development of criteria, strategies, and successful models for the education of youth in detention, incarceration, and/or re-entering school and community that can be replicated throughout the State;
• Assist in development of guidance for schools, local education agencies, other public or private agencies related to juvenile re-entry after juvenile justice involvement with focus on enhancing opportunities for youth success;
• Arrange and/or conduct meetings, conferences, or workshops to support program initiatives;
• Serve on committees and/or workgroups to support or advance Department initiatives;
• Conduct monitoring site visits, phone monitoring and technical assistance to programs, sometimes in collaboration with technical assistance centers, and organize, compile, and review site visit reports;
• Review and/or manage State and federally funded grant applications and contracts related to program requirements, development plans, performance reviews, and aligned budgets;
• Assist in writing requests for proposals as well as the operation of the applications review process and qualifications of potential reviewers;
• Navigate between education, corrections, children and family services, and other juvenile justice systems to ensure and strengthen quality education programs as well as juvenile school and community re-entry efforts;
• Analyze data leading to the generation of potential solutions to issues and barriers related to the detention, incarceration, and re-entry of youth of school age; and
• Perform special assignments as assigned.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a temporary appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. This position will require regular statewide travel for on-site visits with educational providers. Travel is estimated to be 40% of the job duties.

* Leads to a maximum salary of $71,980 based on annual performance advances.
