Minimum Qualifications Required – One to two years of college experience in biology, ecology, natural resources, or related field; driver’s license; ability to commit to summer fieldwork schedule which involves extensive overnight travel; ability to swim / comfort on water in small boats; proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; good communication and writing skills. Desired - previous water quality-related coursework, fieldwork, or professional experience; experience with hand-held data collection devices and GPS units; proficiency with ArcGIS.
Duties Description DESP’s Water Quality Unit visits parks throughout the state to conduct water quality assessments, including identification of aquatic invasive plants, evaluating water quality conditions, and watershed-scale sanitary survey work for select bathing beaches. This work can involve extensive travel and fieldwork, including long days, early morning trips, overnight travel, heavy equipment, hot weather, and sun exposure. Duties will include, among other things, collecting water and plant samples on foot and by boat, participating in picking-up and dropping-off park samples to labs, conducting tests for various water quality parameters, making observations of field conditions, entering data and other office work, and equipment (un)loading and cleaning.
The applicant must be able to work as a member of a small team and be comfortable working in both the office and field. The applicant must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be meticulous in the collection and handling of data. Office work will include data entry and analysis, scanning documents, filing, invoice payment, and keeping track of invoices from laboratories for beach and water quality monitoring activities across the state. Other tasks include recording daily park beach and pool water quality data, making decisions based on that data, and helping with special beach and lake studies.
