Job Specifics

Duties Description The Office of Mental Health (OMH) is recruiting to fill multiple Maintenance Assistant positions. These are temporary/hourly positions in the Bureau of Environmental Design and Improvement located in the Central New York area. Under the general direction of the Maintenance Supervisor 1 and Maintenance Supervisor 3, Maintenance Assistants will travel to various facilities to perform special project renovations, ongoing maintenance, small repair and environmental projects. The Central New York region includes Albany, Marcy, Utica, and Syracuse. Specific duties to be performed will vary by team assignment and may include, but are not limited to the following:
• Perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance, repair, installation, and construction tasks in one or more of the trades including carpentry, painting, minor electrical, masonry/tilework, and flooring.
• Provide field leadership to staff whose duties include facility maintenance and construction.
• Follow written and verbal instructions, project plans, and schedules.
• Possess working knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in trades to which assigned.
• Work independently as needed.
• Perform manual labor with the ability to lift up to 50lbs.
• May climb ladders and work at heights on scaffolds and platforms, and in confined spaces.
• Demonstrate the ability to adhere to OSHA safety standards.
• Assist in the completion of minor rehabilitation projects located at OMH facilities as assigned.
• Assist with general electrical maintenance work including the installation of circuits, lighting, and wiring.
• Assist with general carpentry duties, including the installation and maintenance of walls, ceilings, cabinets, doors, windows, flooring and insulation.
• Assist with general masonry work including the removal of rough or defective spots and patch holes with fresh concrete. Apply ceramic tiles to walls, floors and ceilings.
• Cut, shape and apply tiles to surfaces according to specifications. Apply coats of plaster and/or paint to walls and ceilings.
• Plan and lay out work. Read and interpret plans and blueprints and plan the associated work accordingly.
• Provide support as needed for supervisors and co-workers on assignments.
• Team travel within the assigned region to multiple OMH facilities
• Ability to wear a negative pressure respirator (N95), pass a fit test, and use other personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed to perform job duties.
• Assist with continuous maintenance, repair and care of all grounds including recreation areas, playgrounds, lawns, gardens, driveways, parking lots and walkways, and cemeteries.
• May operate large machinery including backhoe, dump truck, tractor, bucket truck, and commercial lawn machines, as needed.
• Assist with ongoing maintenance, small repair, and environmental improvement projects; perform general grounds keeping, landscaping, building maintenance, and painting as needed.
• Provide emergency response for floods, snowstorms, etc. as needed.
• Perform other projects and duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the NYS CSEA Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services. Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license is preferred, but not required, for these positions.

*Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.

Additional Comments These positions are part of our Central New York Revite team, which travels to various facilities in the Central New York area performing special project renovations, ongoing maintenance, small repair, and environmental improvement projects. This region includes Albany, Marcy, Utica, Syracuse, and Ogdensburg. The regional revitalization team concept was first adopted for the New York City region in 1984-85, and soon expanded to five regions that cover the entire state. The Environmental Revitalization Teams are made up of temporary Trades Generalist, Maintenance Assistant, and Facility Operations Assistant 1 positions that perform ongoing maintenance and small renovation projects to augment facility support staff services. The teams operate on an ongoing basis, making visits at each OMH facility in the region twice each year.

Candidates are not eligible for reimbursement of travel costs.
