Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications Applicants must possess no less than six (6) years of experience in complex civil rights litigation—including chairing or co-chairing at least three (3) trials or complex evidentiary hearings in either federal or state court, and engaging in discovery and motion practice—as well as excellent research, writing, and advocacy skills. The Bureau is seeking an individual who can first and second chair certain matters and provide guidance to litigation teams on other matters. Fluency in a second language is a plus.
Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys in the OAG must be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.
Duties Description The New York State Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking a dedicated and experienced trial attorney to serve in the Civil Rights Bureau in the New York City office as a senior trial counsel. The Bureau enforces laws protecting New Yorkers from discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, marital status, sexual orientation, sexual identity, military status, source of income, or disability. Using federal, state, and local laws, the Bureau investigates and prosecutes alleged patterns of unlawful discrimination in a variety of settings, including employment, housing, education, police and social services, credit and banking, and places of public accommodation. Some of the more recent matters handled by the Bureau seek to promote fair housing and equal employment opportunities, access to education, access for individuals with disabilities, reproductive rights, language access, voting rights, LGBT rights, and successful reentry for former offenders. The Bureau also works to combat predatory lending, bank redlining, immigration services fraud, sexual harassment in the workplace, police misconduct, religious discrimination, and other discriminatory policies and practices. Through community outreach, public education and advocacy efforts, the Bureau works to achieve broad civil rights compliance. The Bureau's docket reflects its commitment to combating discrimination and its effects, ensuring equality of opportunity, and promoting inclusion across New York State.
Additional Comments Candidates from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The OAG is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to workplace diversity.
Salary to be determined commensurate with experience.
