Minimum Qualifications Interested candidates must be currently reachable on the Information Technology Specialist
3 (Systems Programming), SG-23 eligible list or eligible to transfer under Section 52.6
of the Civil Service Law.

52.6 Transfer:

To be eligible to transfer, interested candidates must have at least one-year permanent
competitive service in a 52.6 qualifying title allocated to a salary grade 21 or higher.

Duties Description Under the general direction of the Server Supervisor, the Server Specialist staff will be charged with the following responsibilities:
• Assist subordinate staff in the implementation of and technical support for specialized system server hardware, operating system environment, and software (including installation, modification and maintenance) for the new Retirement Benefit Administration System and ensuring that the Server Supervisor is aware of any emerging issues.
• Assist in the reviews of deliverables as required
• Assist with the development of risk management and risk mitigation plans
• Assist with defining the impact of scope changes
• Assist in the development of work breakdown structures and project plans to support hardware activities
• Assist subordinate staff in development, implementation, and maintenance of detailed technical designs, and procedures for storage management, capacity planning, performance analysis, system tuning, system accounting, change control and system management in accordance with OSC’s systems standards as well as any other applicable standards as they relate to the Retirement Benefit Administration Systems server environments
• Assist subordinate staff in diagnosing and correcting computer system problems (i.e. disk failures, memory leaks, server issues, etc.)
• Participate in selection, installation, and maintenance of OSC’s computer server security software
• Assist subordinate staff in the development of backup, recovery and contingency/disaster planning
• Work cooperatively with NYSLRS’ selected implementation vendors for conversion planning, to ensure that the servers and operating system environment are designed, developed, installed and is performing in a manner adequate to meet the needs of the Retirement Benefit Administration System and the Redesign Project.
• Work with program staff, IT staff, other organizations at the Office of the State Comptroller and external entities, to ensure that system needs are addressed as implementation proceeds
• Set priorities, and prepare person day estimates for project planning
• Assist subordinate staff in performing trouble-shooting and debugging activities
• Perform post-implementation and maintenance activities, as well as activities related to future upgrades and enhancements to the Retirement Benefit Administration System

• Windows server 2008/2012 Operating Systems monitoring, maintenance and troubleshooting
• Fundamentals of Active Directory Management
• Advanced knowledge of server Virtualization technologies
• Knowledge of storage networks
• Disaster Recovery planning and implementation
• Ability to work and collaborate in a dynamic team environment
• Ability to quickly master new information technology concepts using a variety of channels, including on-the-job learning, reading and research along with formal training
• Ability to manage vendor relationships including coordination with vendors and meeting deadlines
• Good oral and written communications
• Demonstrate initiative, independence, confidentiality, planning, communication and organization
