Duties Description Organization Summary: The Environmental Management Bureau’s (EMB) Water Quality Unit performs work critical to protecting public health and safety and protection of water resources at State Park sites throughout New York State. EMB coordinates water quality monitoring programs for State Park beaches and lakes. The overall goal of EMB's Water Quality Unit is to balance safe and enjoyable recreational opportunities with the environmental protection of our water resources. Since over half of the attendance within the State Park system is associated with water use and enjoyment, it is important to assure that these facilities are operated in a manner that is both safe for patrons and protects the resource for future visitors. Water resources also need protection since they provide critical habitat for wildlife and ensure the proper functioning of ecosystem-level processes.
Position Summary: EMB seeks a person to assist with water quality work involving lakes and beaches, as well as work related to a federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) grant for placing boat launch stewards at locations along Lake Erie, the Niagara River, Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River over the next two summer seasons. This position is federally-funded and will last for the 17-month grant period until September 2015. Work may include: grant administration, coordinating training of boat stewards, developing and providing training, analyzing data, preparing water quality monitoring and beach operating protocols, supervising seasonal staff, data analysis, report writing, conducting audits of boat stewards in the field, assisting with planning for aquatic invasive species removal team projects, entering and managing data, processing invoices, purchasing and managing equipment, collecting field data and preparing educational materials. This job will include extensive fieldwork in summer requiring overnight travel.
