Minimum Qualifications • An undergraduate degree or 3 years’ experience related to forestry, environmental studies, forest/stream ecology, natural resource management, invasive species management, or a relevant discipline such as general biology.
• Experience in collection of field data.
• Working knowledge of GPS, GIS and ecological monitoring methods.
• Experience in developing public programs useful.
• Commitment to educating the public on environmental issues.
• Strong interest in and commitment to environmental stewardship.
• First Aid and CPR certification or willingness to obtain required, WFR desired.
• A valid NY State driver’s license.
Duties Description The Forest Health Specialists will remotely work for and report to Invasive Species staff, with some assistance from Regional Natural Resource Steward-Biologists and educators. These positions are for the purpose of performing Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) and Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) data collection and survey, invertebrate monitoring, and volunteer coordination. Some regional travel will be necessary to survey and collect data for additional parks.
This position involves daily field work performing a variety of tasks, including public interaction. Several forms of data collection and data management are necessary, including GIS. Occasional evening and weekend work is required. Campground educational talks will be coordinated and developed with Regional Educators.
Duties:
Primary duties include systematic HWA/EAB surveys and monitoring along trail networks and backcountry for the purpose of determining presence or absence and collection of field data. Other duties include coordinating volunteers, developing and delivering EAB trainings and patron education. Invertebrate surveys focusing on odonates, aquatic macro-invertebrates and moth trapping will occur on three occasions. Specialists are expected to be self-starters, highly independent problem solvers, reliable and motivated with an interest in forest health, environmental stewardship and education. A final report will need to be created and submitted at the end of the season.
