Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).*
To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:
Promotional: One year of permanent competitive, non-competitive, 55-b/55-c, or labor class service as follows:
Service and Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) or Construction Equipment Mechanic.
At the time of appointment, and continuously thereafter, you will be required to have a valid New York State Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with no air brake restriction.
NOTE: Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title and assignment. Cannabis use will be tested for during the pre-employment screening process and may be the basis for disqualification for employment or may be a basis for removal from employment.
Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
Duties Description The incumbent will be responsible for all, but not limited to, the duties described below:
• Supervise and provide technical direction through oral and written instruction to staff performing maintenance, repair, parts, record keeping, and support service activities in Region 5
• Perform complex repairs and rebuilds in a timely manner on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment with minimal supervision, including the inspection and road testing of equipment when necessary.
• Follow Department policies on record keeping, time and attendance, safety procedures, and proper use of NYSDOT equipment.
• Manage employee attendance, timecards, and time off to maintain an effective work force. Administer probationary reports, annual and six-month employee evaluations with input from the Maintenance Supervisor 3 - Motor Equipment and the Maintenance Supervisor 2 - Motor Equipment.
• Assist in the training of Department employees in new procedures and repair techniques as well as required and optional safety training.
• This is a working supervisor position. It includes all the duties of a Service & Repair Mechanic (ME) along with supervisory duties.
The incumbent selected for this position must possess the interpersonal skills needed to provide assistance and guidance to staff to efficiently accomplish Department directives. The incumbent must also be proficient in the use of fleet management software programs.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the Department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
Additional Comments *This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

The starting salary for this position is $63,860. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $54,860 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000, specific to this title and location.
