Minimum Qualifications A Masters Degree in epidemiology, public health, infection control, or a related field and five years of professional post-degree research experience in those fields; or a Doctorate in one of the above fields and three years of post-degree professional research experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the above requirements, the ideal candidate will have: current certification in infection control (CIC); proficiency in conducting routine infection surveillance activities in acute care hospital settings, and experience in conducting research to reduce healthcare-associated infections in select settings and for targeted infections. Additionally, the candidate will have experience providing technical assistance and training to healthcare providers and excellent organizational, training, and written and verbal communication skills and the ability to apply and adapt them to various audiences and settings.
Duties Description The Research Scientist 5 will fill a leadership role within the Hospital-Acquired Infection (HAI) Reporting Program of the Metropolitan Area Regional Office (MARO) in New York City. Duties will include: monitoring and evaluating the implementation of hospital-acquired infection reporting program mandates; developing, monitoring, and evaluating research activities to prevent and control hospital-acquired infections; assessing accuracy of reported data and identifying deficiencies; providing training and feedback on surveillance methods; assessing regional infection prevention programs, identifying best practice models, and working with local partners to implement in other health care facilities; establishing partnerships with local/regional Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) chapters and hospital associations; providing technical consultation to regional staff on infection reporting and conducting joint investigations with Department staff; and providing technical consultation/assistance in health care facilities as needed. The incumbent will also be responsible for participating in the Department’s preparation and response activities for Ebola and other emerging infectious diseases. This may include providing support and technical assistance to designated Ebola treatment centers, evaluating preparedness of healthcare facilities throughout MARO, assisting with oversight and coordination of the traveler screening program at John F. Kennedy International Airport, direct active monitoring and quarantine support for returning travelers being monitored in NYS, and assisting with additional outbreak and response activities if needed. The incumbent will provide technical and programmatic oversight to staff within the HAI Reporting Program. Formulating and conducting special studies and independent research is required, including full responsibility for interpreting and reporting findings. The incumbent will also assume a major role in preparing publications of professional papers and reports.
Additional Comments Permanent, full-time, non-competitive appointment. Overnight travel is required, including to areas which may not be served by public transportation. (25%)
