Minimum Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree required (advanced degree preferred) in computer science, mathematics, applied statistics, physics, engineering or similar disciplines with demonstrated research capability
• Demonstrated qualitative and/or quantitative research abilities; candidates with experience in any of the following are preferred:
o Programming and scripting languages (e.g. Python, Ruby, Visual Basic, MATLAB, Stata, R)
o Data visualization software (e.g. Tableau, d3)
o Database software and languages (e.g. SQL, Splunk, Hadoop)
o Analyzing social networks (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
• Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills
• Ability to communicate technical concepts and results to a non-technical audience
• Highly organized, self-directed, and curious
• Personable and positive, with a high level of integrity
• Interest in public policy and social/economic justice
Duties Description The Research Department in the Office of the New York State Attorney General (“OAG”) seeks candidates for a full-time Data Scientist position in New York City. The Research Department is part of the Executive Division and works closely with senior staff to support the OAG's major initiatives, investigations, and policy development. In the past year alone, our close-knit team has researched and written analytical reports garnering national attention, created and directed multi-million dollar grant programs, and supported several of the office’s major investigations.
Employing over 1,700 people across New York State, the OAG is both the “People's Lawyer” and the State's chief legal officer. The OAG serves all New Yorkers in numerous legal and regulatory arenas, including vigorously protecting the rights of investors and consumers, coordinating state-wide criminal investigations, promoting economic and social justice, encouraging harm reducing public health strategies, and preserving the State’s environment. The OAG also advises the Executive branch of State government and defends actions and proceedings on behalf of the State.
The OAG has a rich source of public and confidential data. The Data Scientist will be responsible for leveraging this information to anticipate research and investigative opportunities as well as expanding existing investigations through:
• Developing or programming new databases
• Exploring and analyzing data
• Developing predictive modeling to detect anomalies
• Communicating findings through written reports and visualizations
• Performing other duties as requested
Additional Comments Salary to be determined commensurate with experience.
