Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in geology or paleontology and two years of professional experience in paleontology OR a Master’s Degree in geology or paleontology and four years of professional experience in paleontology OR a Bachelor’s Degree in geology or paleontology and five years of professional experience in paleontology.
Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the position will be required to participate in an internal peer-review process.
Preferred Qualifications: Special consideration will be given to candidates who possess a Ph.D. in geology or paleontology with extensive experience in Early to Middle Paleozoic eastern North American paleontology, well-established analytical skills directly applicable to research on invertebrate paleontology and/or paleobotany, proven experience in collections care and management, a well-established and extensive record of peer-reviewed publications in paleontology and/or paleobotany, involvement in public and life-long educational programs, demonstrated ability to obtain outside funding through grants and/or other sources, and experience in professional staff supervision.
Duties Description The New York State Museum is seeking to fill a Museum Scientist 4 position. Under the general supervision of the Director, Research and Collections Division, the Museum Scientist 4 serves as Curator of Paleontology/State Paleontologist, performs and disseminates related research, supervises subordinate research and collections staff, and contributes to exhibition, public, and educational programming. Duties will include, but not be limited to, the following:
• Curate the Museum’s paleontology collection. This collection comprises primarily invertebrate fossils and fossil plants, and is among the largest in North America. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining and building the intellectual integrity of the collection, expanding the Museum’s holdings according to Museum and discipline standards, and ensuring proper physical care of this collection;
• Continue a well-established program of paleontological field and laboratory research, design specific research strategies, and conduct research focused on New York that meets the highest professional standards. This research will include utilizing the Museum’s paleontology collection and will focus on invertebrate paleontology and/or paleobotany;
• Oversee the development of grant and other funding proposals to solicit support for research, curatorial, and educational programs;
• Prepare research findings and research reports for publication as peer-reviewed journal articles, monographs and/or books, and professional presentations;
• Participate in the development of public and educational programs to meet the Museum’s internal and/or community oriented goals, and may take responsibility for their implementation. These programs include participation in the Museum’s summer earth-science field school for teachers and administrators in K-12 institutions;
• Participate in exhibit planning; and
• Develop methods and carry out means of communicating research to the Museum’s diverse audiences, including outreach to groups not traditionally represented in museums.
Additional Comments *Leads to a maximum salary of $102,838 based on annual performance advances.
