Minimum Qualifications *Current NYS employee with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent service as a Senior Sanitarian Grade 18; OR **(provisional) anyone meeting the following minimum qualifications: possess a bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences AND one year experience in environmental health protection (defined below); OR a bachelor’s degree, with 30 credits in the natural and applied sciences, of which 18 of the 30 credits must be in the natural sciences (Applied sciences include science-based courses in environmental technology, sanitation technology, medical technology, public health, infection control, and food science/Natural sciences include biology, chemistry, physics, and earth sciences (geology and hydrology)) and two years’ experience in environmental health protection (defined below). A master’s degree in the natural or applied sciences may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Environmental health protection is defined as conducting inspections to determine compliance with federal, state, or local environmental laws, regulations, and established public health standards, OR in the notification of public health environmental hazards and the development of methods to eliminate or control such hazards and/or the spread of disease and other environmental factors impacting the health of individuals and/or the public, such as in hospitals and long term care facilities.

The preferred candidate should possess excellent communication and writing skills.
Duties Description The incumbent of the Senior Sanitarian position will be responsible for assisting Principal Sanitarians in providing direction and oversight to 37 local health departments, 9 district offices, and 4 regional offices. The position is responsible for assisting in the development of regulations and policies, management and implementation of multiple programs in the assigned section. Areas of assignment may include, but are not limited to, children’s camps, public beaches, swimming pools, recreational aquatic spray grounds, childhood/lead poisoning primary prevention program, campgrounds and agricultural fairgrounds, public health nuisances, mobile home parks and mass gatherings. Additional responsibilities may include providing technical assistance and training, as necessary, to the regulated community, preparing reports and correspondence, responding to complaints, and maintaining electronic reporting databases.
Additional Comments *Permanent or **provisional, full-time appointment. Travel, including overnights, to areas that may not be served by public transportation is required. Candidates appointed provisionally will be required to take and pass a qualifying Civil Service exam, when it is given, and be reachable on the resulting eligible list.
