Minimum Qualifications CURRENT NYS EMPLOYEES: Eligible for appointment from the Medical Care Representative list OR Eligible for 70.4 transfer by meeting the open competitive minimum qualifications (see Open Competitive Qualifications below), OR Eligible for reinstatement by having one year of permanent competitive service as a Medical Care Representative.
If you are NOT a current NYS Employee you must meet the Open Competitive qualifications:
You must have a current license, and be registered to practice as a registered professional nurse in New York State. In addition, you must have had three years of registered nursing experience in the following areas: rehabilitation, medical/surgical, public health, community health, visiting nursing, occupational health, utilization review, or review of medical records from hospitals for appropriate ICD9 or 10/DRG/PAS/CPT* coding.
*International Classification of Diseases - 9th or 10th Volume/Diagnostic Related Groups/Products of Ambulatory Surgery/Current Procedural Terminology.
Substitution: A Nurse Practitioner License in any of the areas listed above, or certification as a certified coder, may be substituted for one year of the qualifying experience.

Duties Description • Analyze and review notice of intention to file claims and potential claims for medical malpractice.
• Assist in preparation of answers or other responses to medical malpractice claims and complaints.
• Assist attorneys in the defense of medical malpractice cases.
• Draft memorandum that outlines the medical treatment rendered, to determine if appropriate care was rendered.
• Research medical topics or other literature searches relevant to the possible action.
• Assist attorneys and others on medical issues and on communication with medical staff and risk managers.
• Consult with other units in need of nursing expertise for their cases.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Comments $5,579.00 in geographic pay and $3,026.00 in location pay will be added to the salary listed.
