Minimum Qualifications Applicants must have a minimum of two (2) years of practice experience. Demonstrated skills in legal research, analysis and writing, and a talent for oral advocacy are required. Prior criminal appellate experience or clerkship experience is also required.

Duties Description The Office of the New York State Attorney General is seeking an attorney to serve in the Criminal Appeals/Habeas Unit of the Division of Appeals and Opinions. The selected attorney will be responsible for various types of post-conviction litigation in criminal cases. This includes responding to inmates' federal habeas corpus petitions, filed pursuant to 28 U.S.C. ยง 2254, challenging state court convictions, state parole determinations, and other state action that results in custody. It also includes state appellate and post-conviction motion work arising from criminal prosecutions brought by the Office of the Attorney General. An Assistant Attorney General should expect to draft and argue briefs and motions in federal and state courts throughout New York. This position will be based in New York City.

Additional Comments Salary to be determined commensurate with experience.

Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys in the Office be citizens of the United States.
