Duties Description The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for assisting skilled trades personnel with maintenance work at the Downtown Campus, using hand and shop tools to perform semi-skilled maintenance and repair on structures and equipment.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services..
*Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
This position may be filled from a mandatory reemployment list if one is in effect at the time of appointment.
OPERATING NEEDS:
Ability to perform semiskilled activities in carpentry, electrical, and plumbing; Ability to complete or assist with installations, alterations, and repair of walls, floors, doors, molding, trim, hardware, and other architectural items; Ability to assist or repair, maintain, and install lighting fixtures, bulbs, ballasts, outlets, switches, and other electrical equipment; Ability to respond to maintenance calls for minor clogs and leaking/ faulty fixtures (faucets, toilets, and urinals). Ability to use computerized maintenance system (CMMS); ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work from ladders, scaffolds and lifts, work at heights 20'+ and in confined spaces, ability to navigate stairs throughout duration of shift; knowledge of simple hardware repairs and maintenance; ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; use hand and power tools applicable to the trade; Valid NYS Driver's License required.
