Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Successful completion of a NYS two-year Carpenter Traineeship or NYS two-year carpenter training program OR successful completion of any equivalent carpenter two-year training or apprenticeship program OR four (4) years of full-time experience in carpentry under a skilled journey-level carpenter which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship training in carpentry or training gained by completion of technical courses in carpentry at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department (NYSED) is seeking applicants for the position of Carpenter in the Office of Facilities and Business Services (OFBS). The incumbent of this position will review job orders, blueprints and specifications, as well as visit project sites to determine dimensions, materials and labor required to complete the project. Duties of this position will include, but not be limited to, the following:

• Assign staff to projects and provide oral instructions, specifications and plans;
• Work as a locksmith repairing/rebuilding and replacing all different locksets including making and cutting keys and maintaining all lock and key inventories;
• Inspect work performed by outside contractors to insure conformance with project specifications;
• Prepare and maintain written records of work performed and completed;
• Supervise other trade employees;
• Maintain inventory control and knowledge of state purchasing practices and contract purchases;
• Provide direct coordination between the carpenter shop and all other trades involved in a multi-trade project;
• Exhibit knowledge and experience in the use of various department software programs intended to improve shop efficiency and communication;
• Clearly communicate technical direction to staff members to ensure proper execution of a construction or maintenance plan; and
• Maintain a New York State Asbestos Supervisor’s license.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This position will be a permanent, non-competitive appointment. Salary above applies to candidate appointed at the Carpenter journey level, SG-12. The hiring rate for candidates appointed to the Carpenter Trainee 1 starts at $33,972 and, for current NYS employees, is based on the candidate’s salary at the time of hire. Candidates hired into the traineeship will be advanced to Carpenter upon successful completion of a (two) year traineeship. Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of C or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.

*Salary leads to $49,041 through annual performance advances.
