Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in the primary trade of motor equipment under a skilled journey-level position which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprentice training in a trade or training gained by the completion of technical courses in a trade at a school or institute may be substituted for the above experience on a year-for-year basis. Additional skill set in electric is necessary.
Duties Description Under the supervision of the Park Manager at Hamlin Beach, the General Mechanic is assigned to diagnose and complete repairs on all motorized equipment at Hamlin Beach. Such equipment will include, but is not limited to, trucks, tractors, riding mowers, push mowers, and other lawn and construction equipment. The incumbent may be assigned to repair similar equipment in other parks within the region. This individual also needs to be semi-skilled in electrical work/controls work as well as operate vehicles requiring a CDL Class “A” license and various pieces of large equipment throughout the region. Such equipment will include, but is not limited to, dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, excavators, bulldozers and trenchers. In addition the incumbent may be required to do other semi-skilled trades work as assigned. Although the work of a General Mechanic is periodically inspected by the supervisor, the incumbent is expected to work with considerable independence as is typical of a craftsman. The incumbent will use hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, measuring and testing instruments appropriate for the crafts that are assigned.
Additional Comments Applicants for the position must possess journey level skills in vehicle and motorized equipment repair, be skilled in welding and heavy equipment operation and semi-skilled in electrical work. In addition the incumbent shall possess the ability to supervise and train others, and be available for recall to work on emergency projects. He or she must possess and maintain a valid New York State driver’s license as a term and condition of employment. The incumbent must obtain and maintain a CDL Class A license within the probationary period as a term and condition of employment. The incumbent will be required to obtain and maintain a NYS Dept. of Motor Vehicles Inspector Certification within six months of appointment as a term and condition of employment. The incumbent may be required to work weekends as necessary. Hours may also vary.
