Minimum Qualifications To be considered for appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law. If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law. If you are appointed provisionally, you will have to take and pass the next Civil Service examination for this title when it is administered. Employees appointed provisionally must be reachable on the resulting eligible list for that title or their employment in the position will end. The minimum requirements for taking the examination are:

one year of experience assisting in engineering, engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, electronics, electronics technology, landscape design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying, AND graduation from a high school or possession of a diploma issued by a recognized educational authority.
Substitution
1. 18 semester credit hours of college course work* in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, or electronics; OR
2. graduation from a high school technical education program (recognized by the New York State Education Department as meeting acceptable program practices and standards) in CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, or electronics.
* If you are using the coursework substitution to meet the minimum qualifications you must provide the name and location of the college and a list of the courses you have successfully completed with the corresponding number of credit hours either by listing them in the "remarks" section of the paper application; or on a separate piece of paper.

Duties Description Duties may include but will not be limited to:

Taking Measurements
Checking computations
Collecting and compiling data
Making simple calculations
Performing inspections of small and relatively simple construction projects or portions of projects
Preparing and revising maps and drawings; and
Preparing portions of written reports
Candidates will be expected to understand, interpret and use standard technical reference materials used in construction and commonly used engineering symbols and terminology used in design, construction and materials specifications; demonstrate the ability to communicate with others to obtain or exchange information; and be proficient in the use of computer programs such as Microsoft Office applications.

These tasks may be performed in an office or at a field location on a construction project, with a bridge inspection team or a survey party, or in a laboratory. At the time of appointment, and continuously thereafter, candidates must be able to demonstrate their ability to meet the travel requirements of the position either by possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or access to reliable transportation. Travel requirements may involve reporting to remote office and construction sites. These sites are often not on public transportation routes.

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Some positions may require additional credentials or a background check to verify your identity.
