Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: For permanent appointment or reassignment for NYSED employees, candidates must have one year of permanent competitive service as a Senior Administrative Assistant OR be a current NYS employee eligible for transfer under Section 52.6 of the Civil Service Law.
52.6 Transfer
To be eligible for transfer under Section 52.6, candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in a title SG-21 or above deemed eligible for transfer.
For provisional appointment, candidates must have one year of permanent competitive service as an Administrative Assistant or in a staff administrative title at or above SG-18.
Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Office of P-12 Education is seeking candidates to fill a Senior Administrative Assistant position in the Office of the Senior Deputy Commissioner. Under the general direction of the Senior Deputy Commissioner, the incumbent will serve as a confidential aide to the Senior Deputy Commissioner and is responsible for managing the daily activities of the office, liaising with BOCES and school superintendents, teacher groups, SED program staff, and the Board of Regents, assisting with special projects, and supervising lower-level administrative staff within the office. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Maintain responsibility for monthly P-12 Education portion of Board of Regents meetings;
• Assist the Senior Deputy Commissioner in organizing and coordinating critical issues related to the BOCES District Superintendents (DS’s), which include liaison between Department offices and DS's, coordinating monthly meetings including agenda and presentation development, responsible for DS search/appointment process and serve as liaison with Department attorneys regarding DS contract review;
• Serve as the liaison to the Rockefeller Institute regarding redistricting studies for Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) including the development and oversight of all related Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs);
• Function as Department liaison for the Regents Blue Ribbon Commission on the Arts, Commissioner's Advisory Council for NYS Teachers, NYS Council of School Superintendents (NYSCOSS), School Administrators Association of NYS (SAANYS), NYS School Boards Association (NYSSBA) and New Superintendent Orientation. Establish agendas, prepare meeting materials and notes, and ensure completion of follow up actions;
• Respond to correspondence and phone calls from the general public, department executives, members of the Board of Regents and the Legislature;
• Review outgoing correspondence and reports for accuracy and proper handling and provide corrections and recommendations;
• Assist the Administrative Support Group in review/approval of MOUs, RFPs and grant applications;
• Manage the office of the Senior Deputy Commissioner;
• Develop, review and evaluate data from various sources; prepare reports for the Senior Deputy Commissioner for submission to the Commissioner and Board of Regents;
• Assist in the development of policies, regulations, and legislation affecting P-12 education and advise the Senior Deputy Commissioner of the impact on operations and services;
• Represent the Senior Deputy Commissioner at Department and public meetings; and
• Conduct special projects as assigned.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent or provisional appointment. Filling of this position is contingent upon Division of Budget approval.
*Leads to a maximum salary of $85,635 based on annual performance advances.
