Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must possess certification by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID) OR be eligible to sit for RID certification AND possess two years providing sign language interpreting services for the deaf OR a passing score on the written portion of the RID certification examination AND two years of experience providing sign language interpretive services for the deaf OR a rating of intermediate or above on the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview conducted by the National Technical Institute for the Deaf.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Office of Adult Career and Continuing Education Services (ACCES) is seeking to fill a Translator (Manual Communications) position in the Long Island City District Office. The incumbent of this position will provide interpretation services to a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor who is deaf or hearing impaired including providing sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpreting among colleagues, consumers and constituents. Other responsibilities include gathering information verbally, attending meetings or conferences with the counselor, scheduling appointments in situations where there may be communications difficulties and assisting in the preparation of written material to ensure material is presented in a grammatically correct format and is easily understood.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a temporary appointment contingent on the continued employment of the Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor who the incumbent is assigned to assist. Filling of this position is contingent upon Division of the Budget approval.
