Minimum Qualifications Completed or pursuing a degree in natural resources, biology, environmental studies, recreation, or education.
Strong verbal communication skills and ability to interact with the public.
Capable of performing duties independently and sometimes in inclement weather.
Driver’s license and reliable transportation to and from boat launch sites.
Basic knowledge of aquatic invasive species and identification skills (preferred).

Duties Description Perform voluntary watercraft inspections; remove plant and/or animal material when necessary.
Collect data about boat launch use, AIS spread prevention behaviors, and vectors for potential AIS spread.
Educate patrons about aquatic invasive species; distribute literature and brochures.
Participate in invasive species removal projects with other Boat Stewards and regional “Strike Teams.”

Additional Comments The NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Boat Steward Program is a public education program whose goal is to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS) via voluntary watercraft inspections. With the advent of the state’s AIS law and new regulations at Parks, the Boat Stewards will also be responsible for promoting public understanding of the law, as well as teaching boaters and campers some basic best management practices that they can adopt to avoid spreading AIS to uninfested waterbodies via their boats, trailers, or recreational gear.

There are approximately 15 positions available:

Lake Erie Region: Cattaraugus Creek, Big Six Mile Creek, Buffalo Harbor, Fort Niagara
Lake Ontario Region: Oak Orchard State Marine Park, Braddock Bay, Irondequoit Bay, Wilson Tuscarora
Eastern Lake Ontario: Fair Haven, Stony Creek, Mexico Point, Westcott Beach, Pine Grove, Long Point, Chaumont Bay
Thousand Islands Region: Wellesley Island, Grass Point, Kring Point, Cedar Point, Keewaydin, Black Lake
Lake Champlain Region: Point Au Roche State Park, Dickson Point, Great Chazy River
Finger Lakes Region: Allan H. Treman, Dean’s Cove, Cayuga Lake, Long Point, Seneca Lake, Honeoye Lake, Canandaigua Lake
Saratoga-Capital Region: Saratoga Lake

Stewards should be located within commuting distance of one of these areas. Transportation and housing will not be
provided. Additional launch sites may be added. Each steward will be responsible for one or more launches.
