Minimum Qualifications Interested candidates must be enrolled in high school or be a matriculated undergraduate or graduate college student to be considered for employment. Due to the nature of the position, candidates must be between the ages of 16 -17 years of age.

Duties Description The New York Adolescent Tobacco Use Prevention Act’s purpose is to aid in the reduction of morbidity and mortality caused by tobacco use by reducing access to cigarettes and other tobacco products to children. In compliance with the Adolescent Tobacco Use Prevention Act (ATUPA), retailers are required to obtain positive proof the person buying cigarettes is over the age of 18. Retailers found in violation of this law are subject to fines and loss of their tobacco registrations and lottery licenses for repeated violations. The law also limits the location of vending machines and limits the venues in which free tobacco products can be distributed. These enforcement measures are aimed at making tobacco products less accessible to minors.
In an effort to ensure compliance with retail sales to minors, Student Assistants accompany District Office Sanitarians on site visits to designated retail tobacco vendors. During the visit, the Student Assistants attempt to make purchases of tobacco products.

Each District Office provides oversight to designated coverage areas. The coverage area for each District Office is as follows: Canton - St. Lawrence County; Geneva - Ontario, Wayne, and Yates Counties; Glens Falls - Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties; Herkimer - Fulton, Herkimer, and Montgomery Counties; Hornell - Schuyler and Steuben Counties; Monticello - Sullivan County; Oneonta - Delaware, Greene, and Otsego Counties; Saranac Lake - Essex, Franklin, and Hamilton Counties; Watertown – Jefferson and Lewis Counties.
