Minimum Qualifications Candidates must be reachable for appointment from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list for this title;

OR

Transfer Opportunity - have permanent status as a Secure Care Treatment Aide 1, SG-11, and be eligible for a lateral transfer;

OR

be eligible for lateral transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. To qualify for Section 70.1 transfer, candidates must have at least one year of permanent status in a title approved by Civil Service.

Incumbents must successfully complete at least ten days of intensive specialized training within the first six months of employment on a secure care unit as part of the probationary period.

Candidates may also be required to take and pass a physical examination, physical agility test and a drug screening test prior to appointment.

For provisional appointment - In the event that there is not a valid eligible list, candidates who meet the following open competitive qualifications may be qualified for a provisional appointment:

Candidates must a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as a GED) AND one year of direct patient care experience working with individuals diagnosed with mental illness or with emotional or social behavior problems; Or an associate's or higher level degree in a human service field;* Or an associate's or higher level degree in criminal justice.

*A degree in a human service field includes the professional disciplines of audiology, community mental health, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology rehabilitation counseling, social work, speech/language pathology, and therapeutic recreation (including concentrations in art, creative arts, dance, drama, music, or physical education.) Also included are related academic disciplines associated with the study of human behavior (e.g., gerontology, human services, sociology, speech communication); or human skills development (e.g., counseling, education, human development.) Examples of non-qualifying degrees include but are not limited to: political science, liberal arts, and business.

If you are appointed provisionally, you must take the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title and your score must be reachable on the resulting eligible list before you can be permanently appointed. If you do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score, you may not be retained.

Duties Description As a Secure Care Treatment Aide 1, you would assist with psychiatric treatment, rehabilitation, and the care and safety of individuals diagnosed with mental illness or emotional or social behavior problems. This may include those who are considered to be manipulative, treatment resistant, and/or dangerous to themselves and/or others. You would participate in active treatment programming and be responsible for providing a safe, secure, stable environment within which these patients can be given the intensive care and behavioral interactions needed for stabilization and treatment.

Physical/Medical Requirements: Your physical and medical condition will be evaluated to ensure that you are able to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. The physical/medical standards include a physical fitness test, a medical standards evaluation, and a substance abuse screening. Additional Comments Background Investigation Requirements
Prospective appointees will be: 1) Checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment and may have their names removed from the eligible list(s) for the title(s) if applicable. 2) Investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC), which includes State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. All convictions must be reported; conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or any falsified or omitted information on the prospective appointee’s employment application, may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prospective employees will be fingerprinted in order to obtain a record of their criminal history information, and may be required to pay any necessary fees. 3) Screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees will be required to pay any necessary fees. Additionally, prospective employees whose names are indicated on the SCR may be barred from appointment.
