Minimum Qualifications • Three or more years of professional experience in communications, journalism, public affairs, public relations, marketing or similar area.
• Exceptional writing, speaking and organizational skills a must.
• Ability to juggle multiple projects on differing deadlines while maintaining responsibility for daily operational tasks.
• Prior experience serving as a spokesperson with a government, financial or advocacy organization preferred, but other experience will be considered.
Duties Description OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop, implement and evaluate long-range communications initiatives and daily tasks for the State Comptroller’s Communications office.
• Provide ongoing strategic communications counsel and direction to the Comptroller, senior management and operational entities of the state Comptroller’s office.
GENERAL OPERATIONS AND ACTIVITIES
• Work with press office team, senior leadership and Comptroller to determine communications needs, develop communications strategies, create materials and proactively implement communication efforts for the Comptroller and the Office of the State Comptroller.
• Serve as a media spokesperson on sensitive policy and political issues, as well as audits and public policy and financial reports.
• Assemble and ensure accuracy of information in all communications and media relations outreach and communications materials, utilizing all available data and securing approval from subject matter experts and senior managers as needed.
• Exceptional writing and oral communications skills critical in order to prepare communications materials, including press releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, statements, social media posts, web content, letters, publications and other materials for distribution to the press, public and other key stakeholders.
• Coordinate press conferences and other public events, in NYC and around the state.
• Develop and coordinate web-based and social media-based communications tools in support of the Comptroller’s priorities and communications initiatives.
• Operate in a way, which fosters a commitment to excellence and teamwork. Maintain an overall environment within the department, which is positive, results-oriented and dedicated to excellence.
SPECIFIC AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
• Spearhead communications activities for the New York State Common Retirement System, working closely and cooperatively with other Communications staff.
• Coordinate communication activities with the special division within the Retirement System that coordinates communications activities, including publications, web materials and other communications functions.
• Spearhead communications strategy and media relations outreach for the unclaimed funds program.
• Manage communications for the 529 College Savings Program, including coordinating with outside PR and marketing counsel as well as the necessary contacts in the Executive agencies.
• Provide communications support for state audits, New York City policy and fiscal reports, policy reports and the state pension fund.
• Assist with assembling background, talking points and key materials for editorial board meetings and one-on-one reporter meetings.
• Manage, develop and update NYC media lists, as well as assist with the development of key stakeholder lists.
• Manage, develop and update materials, including fact sheets and other background material, on a range of key priorities and programs for the press, public and key stakeholders.
• Travel required; overnight trips will occur.
• Perform various other duties as needed.
