Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree or higher AND possess a valid NYS teaching certificate in Speech or Speech/Language or be eligible for NYS teaching certification in Speech or Speech/Language.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Special consideration will be given to candidates with the following qualifications:
• Speech Pathologist.
• Experience working with deaf students.
• Ability to communicate through ASL/Sign Language.
Duties Description The NYS Education Department’s School for the Deaf is seeking applicants to fill a Temporary Instructor (Speech) position for the 2016 Summer School session. Major responsibilities of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Instruct students in program goal areas;
• Provide speech services to students aged 4 to 20 years in 1:1 and small group settings;
• Prepare daily lesson plans, learning units and instructional materials based on curriculum standards, course outlines and associated assessments developed by the NYS State Education Department;
• Conduct instruction using current teaching methods, observations, and facilitation, as well as computer technology skills;
• Utilize audiovisual equipment and group projects as appropriate;
• Manage the classroom maintain order and discipline in the classroom and elsewhere on campus;
• Assist students in reaching personal responsibility goals as defined in their Individual Education Program (IEPs);
• Supervise after-school detention as required;
• Prepare evaluation reports, report cards and deficiency notices;
• Write quarterly progress reports and IEPs for all students;
• Maintain daily attendance records and Medicaid notes;
• Participate in departmental staff, parent, multidisciplinary team meetings, and meetings of various committees to discuss students’ learning progress, behavior, medical and other problems related to education; and
• Assist teachers in preparation for assessments, including Regents exams.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. This will be a temporary, hourly position with a schedule of 7 hours per day for 30 working days. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit.
