Minimum Qualifications Possession of a High School Diploma, or equivalent, and prior experience as a boxing, mixed martial arts, kickboxing and/or wrestling inspector. Prior experience as an inspector for SAC preferred; experience with another State Athletic Commission will be considered. Individuals must have the legal right to work in the United States; have strong interpersonal communication skills; and have the ability to work a flexible schedule. Frequent standing, walking, bending, and climbing stairs are required, as well as, the ability to visually observe and assess various bout activities. Should possess some basic knowledge of sport(s) of boxing, mixed martial arts, kickboxing, and/or wrestling. The ability to speak multiple languages is a plus. Must be someone with the ability to lead and oversee a large group.

Duties Description The New York State Athletic Commission (SAC) is authorized to regulate professional boxing, mixed ,atrial arts, kickboxing and wrestling contests, matches, and exhibitions within the State of New York. Comprised of five members appointed by the governor, in addition to a physician, a Medical Advisory Board, and staff, SAC administers licenses, enforces rules and regulations, and ensures that medical and safety standards are being met. It provides training seminars for referees, judges, physicians and inspectors, oversees hundreds of events annually across the state, and is committed to promoting and maintaining the health, safety and integrity of its regulated athletic activities.

The SAC announces exciting opportunities to serve as a Deputy Commissioner:

Deputy Commissioners are assigned by SAC to assist in the management and oversight of professional boxing, mixed martial arts, kickboxing, and wrestling events occurring in the State and report directly to the assigned Director of Boxing, Director of MMA/Kickboxing, and Executive Director. At professional boxing, mixed martial arts, kickboxing events the Commission may assign Deputy Commissioners different tasks referring to one as the “Chief Inspector.”

a. Illustrative duties of a Deputy Commissioner, not assigned as a “Chief Inspector” include, but are not limited to:
i. Attending pre-bout weigh-ins, professional boxing, mixed martial arts, kickboxing, and wrestling contests as directed by SAC;
ii. Enforcing all applicable statutes, regulations and/or policies of the Commission;
iii. Conducting inspections of boxing, mixed martial arts, kickboxing, and wrestling venues for compliance with Commission statutes, regulations and/or policies.
iv. Supervising other SAC personnel assigned to events;
v. Addressing contract issues at weigh-in (i.e., overweight combatants failing to make their contracted weight);
vi. Providing proper payments to officials;
vii. Tabulating scoring from the judges for official SAC results;
viii. Ensuring proper seating arrangements for SAC officials during a contest;
ix. Collecting urine samples from the “Chief Inspector” to be provided to a laboratory courier if available;
x. Ensuring venue has adequate medical personnel, including an ambulance or ambulances.
xi. Coordinating with venue security as needed;
xii. Conducting evaluations of inspectors; and
xiii. Performing other boxing, mixed martial arts, kickboxing, and wrestling related duties as directing by SAC staff.

b. Illustrative duties of a “Chief Inspector” include, but are not limited to:
i. Attending pre-bout weigh-ins and professional boxing contests as directed by SAC;
ii. Enforcing all applicable statutes, regulations and/or policies of the Commission;
iii. Supervising other SAC personnel assigned to events;
iv. Overseeing dressing room activities including, collection of urine and gloving of combatants;
v. Collect and assign gloves issued by the promoter to the appropriate SAC inspector;
vi. Provide and collect urine specimen cups to the appropriate SAC Inspector;
vii. Coordinate proper timing for the “walk-out” of each participant with the promoter;
viii. Provide purse payments to the boxers;
ix. Conducting evaluations of inspectors; and
x. Performing other boxing, mixed martial arts, kickboxing, and wrestling related duties as directing by SAC staff.

Deputy Commissioners are required to work until their assignments are completed, which is approximately 7 to 9 hours per show.

Additional Comments Deputy Commissioners are compensated $150.00 per day. Events take place throughout New York State; please indicate geographic areas in which you are willing to consider employment (e.g. Statewide; City of Utica; Suffolk County; etc.) Applicants will be fingerprinted and must submit to a background check that includes a review of criminal history and tax records.
