Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor’s degree or higher AND a valid NYS Teaching Certificate in Special Education or Teacher of the Visually Impaired.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Special consideration will be given to candidates with the following qualifications:

• Certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI); and
• Proficiency in Braille instruction and/or have significant experience with reading and writing Braille.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s School for the Blind is seeking applicants for an Instructor position for the 30-day 2016 Summer School session. Major duties of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Provide classroom instruction;
• Assure that appropriate Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) are established and that all mandates are fulfilled;
• Assure that behavior plans are established and consistently implemented;
• Administer standardized educational assessments, collect data, and monitor progress;
• Coordinate development of educational reports and recommendations;
• Establish and monitor individual Redbooks and data collection;
• Plan and conduct activities to enhance students’ development of skills in their areas of need;
• Establish a daily schedule for students and staff;
• Assist in home, residential, health center, and school communication and ensure program consistency;
• Supervise assigned Instructor Assistants;
• Perform other Behavioral and Health and Safety Standards as defined in the employee handbook;
• Prepare evaluation reports, report cards and deficiency notices, quarterly progress reports and IEP’s and all other required paperwork;
• Maintain daily attendance records;
• Participate in departmental staff, parent, and multidisciplinary meetings; and
• Perform other duties as requested by supervisors.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. This will be a temporary, hourly position with a maximum of 35 hours per week and the weekly schedule determined based on student needs. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits.
