Minimum Qualifications Minimum of five years’ experience working in the field of disabilities in advocacy, service provision or coordination, or policy development. A thorough understanding of the OPWDD service system including available services and the process for accessing such services. Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and multitask. Supervision of professional level staff. Experience working directly with individuals with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities.

Duties Description The incumbent oversees advocacy related activities for the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). The Director of Advocacy Services reports directly to the Executive Deputy Commissioner and supervises advocacy personnel and information line personnel.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Functioning as the lead contact between OPWDD and individuals receiving services, their families, and advocacy groups for advocacy related issues.
• Communicating with advocates employed by regional office and state operations to oversee statewide advocacy efforts
• Coordinating and facilitating quarterly Family Support Services meetings with outside stakeholders
• Serving as the voice of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families on agency initiatives and outreach efforts
• Serving as a liaison with the Justice Center for advocacy and ombudsman functions
• Assisting individuals and families to properly advocate for themselves and others
• Supervising the OPWDD information line staff and communications and Central Office advocacy staff and outreach.
