Minimum Qualifications Research Scientist 1 (G18) – Bachelor’s degree in Radiological Sciences; Nuclear Medicine; Public Health; Occupational Safety or Environmental Health and two years of professional research experience in Radiation Safety or a related field; or a master’s degree (MS or MPH) in Radiological Sciences; Nuclear Medicine; Public Health; Occupational Safety or Environmental Health and one year of such professional experience.

Research Scientist 2 (G22) – Bachelor’s degree in Radiological; Nuclear Medicine; Public Health; Occupational Safety or Environmental Health and three years of professional research experience in Radiation Safety or a related field; or a master’s degree in Radiological Sciences; Nuclear Medicine; Public Health; Occupational Safety; or Environmental Health and two years of such experience in the appropriate field; or a doctorate in the appropriate field (Radiological Sciences; Nuclear Medicine; Public Health; Occupational Safety or Environmental Health).

Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to those candidates with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal; excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage deadlines; ability to relate to all levels of personnel in a collaborative manner; demonstrated ability to set priorities, work with diplomacy and efficiency in a pressured environment, and the ability to carry out activities with minimum supervision. The candidate must be detail oriented, with computer literacy including knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience managing radiation safety and other health and safety programs in a laboratory environment is preferred. Professional certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics is desirable, but not required.

Duties Description The incumbent will serve as the Radiation Safety Officer responsible for managing the radiation safety program for the use of radioactive materials or radiation-producing equipment in approximately 30 research or diagnostic laboratories. This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring that radioactive shipments are properly logged, monitored, inventoried, and delivered to all approved users; conducting quarterly sealed source inventories for approximately 25 devices; overseeing monthly radioactive surveys; conducting quarterly lab audits, managing the collection/processing of radioactive waste; conducting new employee radiation safety training and tracking the completion of annual refresher training for approximately 200 users and/or affected employees; coordination of annual survey meter calibrations; managing the radioactive badge program, and managing of the laser safety program. Additionally, the Research Scientist will serve as the Wadsworth Center’s contact with federal and state radiation regulatory agencies. The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating quarterly Radiation Safety Committee meetings and ensuring all annual regulatory reporting requirements and/or permit fees are completed as required. As an Alternate Responsible Official (ARO) for the Center’s Select Agent Program, the incumbent will also be responsible for assisting the Center’s Responsible Official (RO) with ensuring compliance with 42CFR Part 73 – Select Agents and Toxins, including recordkeeping, participating in annual inspections and external audits, and other ongoing activities related to select agent and toxin program compliance. The incumbent will also be expected to manage other occupational safety programs for the Center and provide daily site safety support for the Biggs Laboratory.
