Minimum Qualifications We are seeking a candidate at least ten (10) years of civil litigation and/or appellate experience and demonstrated knowledge of workers’ compensation laws. An ideal candidate will also have experience in some or all of the following areas: supervision of other lawyers; appellate experience in New York courts; and development and management of affirmative labor-related litigation.

Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys in the Office be citizens of the United States.

Duties Description The Labor Bureau of the Office of the New York State Attorney General is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as the Workers’ Compensation Section Chief (Section Chief) in New York City. The Workers’ Compensation Section represents the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board in certain cases and has approximately three (3) attorneys and one (1) civil service staff member, as well as access to additional support staff.

The Section Chief’s responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
(1) Supervising the Section’s attorneys and staff, including reviewing and editing briefs to the Appellate Division and overseeing motions practice, Article 78 proceedings and federal court actions involving decisions made by the Board;
(2) Directly handling a caseload of workers’ compensation appeals and other matters;
(3) Maintaining a strong relationship with the NYS Workers’ Compensation Board;
(4) Developing investigations and civil prosecutions of employers for failure to obtain workers’ compensation insurance as required by law; and
(5) Ensuring appropriate professional development opportunities for the Section’s attorneys, including keeping them, as well as the Bureau Chief and Deputy Bureau Chief, apprised of the Section’s significant cases and developments in the Worker’s Compensation field.
