Minimum Qualifications Highway Maintenance Worker 1:
Satisfactory completion of the two-year Highway Maintenance Worker traineeship OR two years of experience in the operation of highway construction, maintenance equipment or other vehicles in excess of 26,000 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating with air brakes and manual transmission and possession of a New York State Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no airbrake restriction.
NYS DOT certification to operate two of the following pieces of Category 1 equipment: patch roller, sewer cleaner, wood chipper, tractor-mounted mower or forklift; and the following three types of Category 2 equipment: heavy dump truck, snowplow with wing (OPP certification) and front-end loader.
Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2:
Must be 18 years old; pass physical/medical examination and drug test; and possess a New York State Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no airbrake restriction AND have one year of experience in the operation of highway construction, maintenance equipment or other vehicles in excess of 26,000 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating with air brakes and manual transmission, which can include operating a heavy dump truck, backhoe, loader, roller, grader, hydraulic excavator, and other similar equipment.
Substitution: Formalized intensive equipment training totaling at least 85 hours must include formal training in the operation of a large dump truck, front end loader, and at least one other piece of equipment described above may substitute for the one year of operational experience.
Duties Description Winter
• Operate a snowplow with nose and wing-plow attached, 2 cubic yard loader, and other equipment.
• Perform other highway maintenance tasks as assigned.
• 2 primary shifts: Morning 4:00 am – 12:30 pm and Afternoon 12:30 pm – 9:00 pm (hours vary by residency).
• Shifts and overtime are assigned on the basis of seniority.
• Overtime is used to round out coverage through early call-in, hold over during the week, and call in on weekends and holidays.
• Employees must be available and able to respond within one hour of being called. Overtime response and shift work are requirements for this job. Therefore, use of vacation and personal leaves are limited during the winter but can be used during the summer.
Summer
• Paving, resurfacing, roadside maintenance, drainage maintenance, traffic control, and other assigned tasks.
