Minimum Qualifications Provisional Appointment: Candidates must have eight years of crime analysis experience. Five years of this experience must have included the supervision of staff within a crime analysis unit responsible for the creation of comprehensive analytical products. This experience must have involved querying and extracting data from law enforcement information systems; the use of one or more geographic information systems (GIS) and statistical software packages; and experience training, lecturing, and/or teaching subject matter directly related to crime analysis and crime mapping to policing agencies. Substitution: A bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years of experience; a master's or higher-level degree may be substituted for one additional year of experience; and a certificate in crime analysis or GIS may be substituted for one year of experience.
If you are selected and appointed on a provisional basis, you must take and pass the next exam which is held for this title and be reachable on the resulting eligible list in order to continue in the position.

Permanent Appointment: Reachable on the current eligible list for the title Crime Analysis Technical Training Coordinator.

Duties Description Under the supervision of the Crime Analysis Center Program Manager, the incumbent of this position will be responsible for the ongoing growth and development of the crime analysis function by law enforcement agencies throughout New York State, primarily focused on jurisdictions funded through the Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative, as well as the DCJS-supported Crime Analysis Centers. The incumbent will be responsible for providing direct field services at various locations in the form of technical assistance and on-site training of crime analysts, facilitating outside training and technical assistance as necessary, and conducting assessments of individual and organizational crime analysis capabilities and needs. Specifically, the incumbent will:

Oversee all crime analysis training under the auspices of DCJS, including the 17 counties supported through GIVE initiative funding and the Crime Analysis Center program;

Provide written assessments and progress reports to management concerning the development and performance of crime analysts, units and the Crime Analysis Centers;

Coordinate activities with the GIVE Unit, Directors of the Crime Analysis Centers, and Crime Analysis Center Program Manager;

Provide training and technical assistance on a wide variety of crime analysis topics and strategies; facilitate training opportunities as necessary;

Provide training and technical assistance on the use of technology and tools used in crime analysis; facilitate training opportunities as necessary;

Advance, implement and facilitate the use of distance learning to fulfill training goals and objectives;

Identify evolving technology needs of the crime analysis centers, including best practices in the field;






Research and evaluate new and emerging technology to support the crime analysis function;

Make recommendations and provide required justification for new technology purchases and implementation;

Assist in maintaining a complete inventory of hardware and software in use at all Crime Analysis Centers;

Participate in policy development involving the use of sophisticated computer applications used in crime analysis;

In conjunction with the NYS Municipal Police Training Council, oversee the ongoing development of the Crime Analysis Certification program that seeks to develop training curriculum, standards and criteria for multiple levels of crime analysis certification. This program will establish professional standards and advancement opportunities for crime analysts based on experience and skill development.

This position will require frequent statewide travel, approximately 20%, possibly more.
