Minimum Qualifications Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including or supplemented by twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: silviculture, forest mensuration, forest protection, forest soils, dendrology botany, land surveying and forest biology, OR
One (1) year of diversified, technical forestry experience in two (2) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests; forest data collection, including forest inventory and mapping.
Duties Description Incumbent will complete forest inventory and prepare timber sales on state forest properties under the direction of a professional forester. Incumbent may be required to work alone in rough terrain during all seasons. Incumbent will be required to gather and input field data into the State Forest Inventory Program. Assist with timber type mapping and inventory plot layout using GIS technology. Essential skills include tree identification, tree diameter and height measurement, GPS navigation and GIS data manipulation. Responsibilities include but aren't limited to: marking timber, calculating timber volumes, summarizing timber tallies and preparing timber sale maps. Must have valid NYS Drivers License and the ability to use equipment including electronic data collector, compass, point sample prizm and work station computers. Must also have knowledge of Excel, Word, Arc GIS and image software.
Additional Comments The title of the position is Forestry Technician 1 (Seasonal). While the work is year-round, the work hours/week will be adjusted seasonally to require more hours during the summer and fewer during the winter. The total annual work hours are limited to 1,750. Funding for this position is secured through 3/31/17, with a likelihood of continuing beyond this date. More information will be available during interviews.
