Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Reassignment: One year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a Senior Librarian.
§70.1 Transfer: One year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in any of the following titles: Senior Librarian (Law), Senior Librarian (Medicine), Senior Librarian (Reference) or Senior Librarian (Technical Processes).
Provisional Appointment: Candidates must have a master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association AND two years of full time post-degree professional librarian experience.
Note: The Civil Service examination for this title was given in August 2016. In order to be considered for a provisional appointment, you must have taken this examination.
Duties Description The New York State Library (NYSL) is seeking to fill a Senior Librarian within the Manuscripts and Special Collections (MSC) Unit. The MSC Unit is responsible for the acquisition, access and preservation of the NYSL collections of manuscripts, private archives, rare books, maps, prints, photographs, broadsides, poster, musical scores and ephemera. These collections document the history of New York State from the 17th century to the present. Under the direction of the Associate Librarian (Reference), the Senior Librarian will provide reference and information services, acquire materials for collections, and catalog and process special collections. Other duties of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Provide reference and information services in all subjects to a diverse public onsite, via telephone, e-mail, direct mail and Interlibrary Loan;
• Staff the Manuscripts & Special Collections Reference Desk in the Research Room, shared with the New York State Archives;
• Collaborate with MSC staff and staff in other units to manage the digitization and digital access to materials in MSC;
• Process, catalog and prepare online finding aids for material in MSC to make information on collections widely available;
• Collaborate with other NYSL staff to resolve problems related to the collection maintenance of materials, including problems relating to the location and classification;
• Work with potential donors and vendors to develop NYSL Manuscripts and Special Collections;
• Identify and suggest materials in a variety of formats (including print, microform and electronic) for collection development within other units of NYSL; and
• Serve on NYSL committees as assigned.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent or provisional appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. This position requires participation in a rotating Saturday work schedule. Verification of degree will be required.
*Leads to a maximum salary of $71,412 with annual performance advances.
