Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
A viable eligible list may not exist in this location and NYSDOT may be authorized to make a provisional appointment at this location. Candidates appointed provisionally must take and pass the next scheduled Civil Service examination, and be reachable on the resulting eligibility list, or their employment in the position (may have hold item) will end.

In order to be considered for provisional appointment, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications as stated below:

Promotion Examination - For qualified employees of New York State, candidates must have one year of permanent service as An Engineering Geologist, Engineering Materials Analyst, Environmental Engineering Technician 2, Junior Engineer, Senior Drafting Technician (all parenthetics), Senior Engineering Technician, or Senior Engineering Technician (Soils).

Open Competitive Examination: Either 1. FOUR years of experience assisting in engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying, AND graduation from high school or possession of a diploma issued by a recognized educational authority;

Or 2. a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, or electronics;

Or 3. an associate’s degree in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, or electronics AND TWO years of experience listed above in #1;

Or 4. a certificate in CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, or electronics** issued by a regionally accredited college or university and TWO years of experience listed above in #1.

Duties Description The Planning Unit is seeking a PET candidate that possess multiple abilities ranging from traffic data collection to data base management and record retrieval. As a PET in the Planning/Data Services Unit you can anticipate being involved in the following types of assignments:


•Working in the Regional Data services Unit which is responsible for : Traffic Count Program, conducting special counts, consultant management of short counts, Highway Sufficiency Program, Pavement scoring, Local Highway Inventory, GIS mapping and various calculations relative to traffic growth, trends and modeling;
Provide technical assistance to the general public in the use of the Traffic Data Viewer;

Assist the Regional Railroad Coordinator with functions relative to that role (i.e.: Data base management, field inspections, meetings with RR Agencies and/or municipalities;

Assist the Regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator with project reviews and comments. Meet with local officials and interest groups regarding bicycle and pedestrian concerns;

Provide technical expertise and support in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to assist with the asset management program. Identify systematic problems and errors;

•Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
