Minimum Qualifications Applicants should possess strong analytical, and writing skills, demonstrate an attention to detail, possess good interpersonal skills, and have the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team. Candidates should also have a working knowledge of Microsoft EXCEL. An interest in education finance policy is required.

Duties Description An intern is sought in the Education Unit to assist in research and data analysis to inform future special education as well as other educational program proposals. Analyzing policy, legislation, fiscal and/or programmatic elements of educational programs in New York is a central focus of the Education Unit.

The intern will assist with analytical and research projects related to programs, such as: preschool and school-age special education, non-public schools, child nutrition, and Federal programs.

One specific project for the intern will be analyzing financial data for approximately 600 special education providers. This data is reported annually in providers' Consolidated Fiscal Reports (CFRs) and serves as the basis for calculating State reimbursement to these providers. This project will involve organizing a significant amount of financial data, working with supervisors to identify relevant/useful reports, and developing templates that can be used to generate/update those reports as new data becomes available.

The intern will also research how other states deliver and finance special education and other education programs for students in pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade level, and between ages 3-21. Additional projects may be undertaken in other education programs in the Section's and Unit's purview, as time permits.

During the term of this summer position, the intern will draft briefing materials to summarize key findings and results of these projects. These findings will inform the development of budget recommendations to be included in the 2018-19 Executive Budget.
