Minimum Qualifications Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys in the Office be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.
Duties Description The Environmental Protection Bureau is seeking a Section Chief to lead its Affirmative Litigation Section in New York City. The Section Chief will be responsible for developing and managing complex civil law enforcement investigations and litigation and for managing a group of lawyers with diverse experience and skills. The Section Chief will supervise affirmative environmental litigation, including contaminated site cost recovery litigation, in both state and federal courts. Applicants must have a minimum of ten (10) years of experience litigating complex environmental cases and conducting investigations. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of federal and state environmental statutes, will have served as primary counsel in both federal and state court litigation, including cases under the federal Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA)and other federal statutes; will have experience in every aspect of litigation, including initiation of litigation, discovery, motions, oral arguments, trials, and settlements; and will have at least three years of experience managing attorneys and litigation teams. Excellent writing skills are required, and the applicant must have the ability to work well with client agencies. Commitment to public service is essential.
Additional Comments Salary to be determined commensurate with experience.
