Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made. If you are appointed provisionally, you will have to take and pass the next Civil Service examination for this title when it is administered. Employees appointed provisionally must be reachable on the resulting eligible list for that title or their employment in the position (may have hold item) will end.
The minimum requirements for taking the examination are: A land surveyor’s license and current registration. You must indicate your land surveyor’s license number and registration information on your application by listing them in the “license or certification” section of the online/paper application.
Duties Description Under the direction and supervision of a Senior Land Surveyor, the incumbent will perform a variety of Right Of Way (ROW) Mapping and Land Surveying Duties that may include but are not limited to:
•Supervising, managing, directing, and making work assignments to staff within the ROW mapping or survey units;
•Developing and completing land surveys for NYSDOT projects;
•Developing technical expertise of all staff; Reviewing ROW acquisition maps and other special maps prepared by department staff or consultants;
•Providing for QA /QC of all work unit deliverables;
•Reviewing title data, abstract request maps, control reports and other survey computations for accuracy and quality;
•Making complex highway boundary and property line determinations and assisting staff with legal research and review of applicable Highway Law and record information;
•Resolving ambiguities and minimizing discrepancies in the aforementioned;
•Testifying in court as an expert in cases of land surveys;
•Providing direction and review of work prepared by consultants and non-Department staff for quality and adherence to NYSDOT standards;
•Providing information and preparing responses to inquires from other Regional functional units such as Design, Office of Right of Way, Construction, Operations, Traffic, Planning & Program Management as well as outside agencies and the public.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
